When will Georgia sports betting apps launch in 2024?

佐治亚州体育博彩 ;is not yet legal or active. Many hoped that 2024 would be the year when state lawmakers would pass legislation to bring sportsbooks to the Peach State. Unfortunately, that did not happen, and we must look to 2025 for a solution.

Sports fans in Georgia can turn to daily fantasy sports sites, which are legal. There are also legal social sportsbooks such as Fliff. We cover those options below.

Georgia Sports Betting: At a Glance

Georgia is one of the most populous states that does not yet have legal sports betting apps and sportsbook websites. That will hopefully change soon. Some public opinion polls have revealed that the majority of adults in GA are in favor of some form of legal sports betting in their state.

When Will Georgia Sports Betting Launch?

Georgia’s constitution prohibits gambling. The state does not have land-based casinos, nor does it permit an online state lottery, iGaming, or sports betting, as of the end of the 2024 legislative session.

The most recent efforts to legalize sports betting in the Peach State were unsuccessful in March 2024 when the Senate failed to pass HB237.

In order for sports betting to come to be in Georgia, the state constitution must be amended, and the governor must approve a sports betting law passed through both houses of the state legislature.

When and if legal GA sports betting is approved, the state would have to implement sports betting regulations which would take time. This puts the earliest possible date for sports betting in Georgia to 2025.

What’s Happening in Georgia Sports Betting Right Now

  • March 29, 2024:Georgia sports betting once again failed to advance. The state once again encountered a roadblock during the final day of the legislative session, when a resolution to bring sports betting to the state failed to secure approval.
  • March 20, 2024:The Higher Education Committee of the Georgia House convened to deliberate on Senate Resolution (SR) 579, which complements Senate Bill 386, a legislative proposal to legalize sports betting within Georgia. The lack of educational awareness surrounding the subject was an ominous sign that lawmakers aren’t sufficiently immersed in the topic to drive it forward.
  • March 14, 2024:The Georgia House of Representatives conducted an inaugural hearing on a proposal to finally bring online sports betting in Georgia. This bill was initially passed by the Georgia Senate in early February.
  • February 29, 2024:The Georgia Senate approved Resolution 579 without any alterations in what was a major step toward the realization of a statewide referendum on Georgia sports betting. SR 579, which looks to legalize sports betting in Georgia, garnered significant support with a decisive vote of 41 in favor and 12 opposed.
  • January 30, 2024:A Georgia sports betting bill was introduced to the Senate in an attempt to legalize retail and online sports betting in the state. The bill, SB 386, takes an unconventional route as it sidesteps the need for a constitutional amendment.

Top Sports Betting Apps Expected in Georgia

We do not know which sportsbooks will apply for Georgia licensure if and when sports betting is legalized. Several daily fantasy sports operators already provide wagering activities to Georgia residents, as the industry is still unregulated throughout the state. Market leaders DraftKings, FanDuel, and Yahoo Fantasy have already launched their mobile apps in Georgia.

Other sportsbook operators are likely to want to be on the market in Georgia after legalization. These include BetRivers, a sports betting platform that would be a great addition to the industry, providing consumers with an alternative to the bigger brands.

BetMGM is also likely. The sportsbook typically offers a generous first bet or new user bonus, and live stream betting.

Caesars Sportsbook would likely enter a GA sports betting market, especially because it offers good international and foreign sports betting odds for sports fans who like to place wagers on non-American events such as soccer, Australian Rules Football, and the Olympics.

When the state finally achieves legalization, Georgia sports betting will likely be a popular activity for many in this state, and attract many operators. Thus far, the proposed taxes, application fees, and annual fees are fairly reasonable compared to other states, and the lack of a land-based casino partnership requirement means license limitations may be practically nonexistent.

While we wait for Georgia sports betting apps to launch, if you are in a legal sports betting state, choose from any of the sportsbooks below to get started with NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and other betting.

The Future of Legal Sports Betting in Georgia

Legal sports betting has been a long-standing issue for Georgia residents. The industry still hasn’t launched in this state, and many sports betting enthusiasts may consider using offshore or illegal betting in its stead.

This is always a bad idea.

Offshore and illegal betting sites are dangerous places because by definition they are operated by criminals. Your wagers are not protected against fraud, and you do not have the same recourse to dispute a wager outcome as you would from a legal, regulated sportsbook.

Licensed and regulated sportsbooks, like those that will come to Georgia once the industry fully launches are safe and reputable. They are required to employ security measures to protect your personal information from identity theft.

It’s better to wait for Georgia’s legal sportsbooks to launch, to protect your data and your money.

Georgia Sports Betting Revenue

We cannot yet accurately predict the revenue the state government might enjoy as a result of legalizing sports betting. But, thanks to the proliferation of the activity legally in many other jurisdictions, we can make good estimates.

Several organizations and sports betting legalization supporters project that the Georgia sports betting industry could bring in between $30 million and $100 million in its first year. Those funds would be well used by the state government.

Many lawmakers want to use tax revenue from sports betting to fund needs-based scholarships as well as rural healthcare and broadband Internet expansion.

We can also make predictions by looking at a state that has already successfully launched sports betting. Virginia generated $51.8 million in tax revenue from sports betting in its first year, in 2022.

Time will tell how Georgia’s sports betting industry operates, and the kind of revenue it generates for the state. The revenue brought in could be substantial.

How Georgia Sports Betting Compares To Nearby States

Georgia’s path to sports betting legalization has not been fast, but it has been relatively consistent. Each year since the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) in 2018, some Georgia legislators have worked tirelessly to arrive at a satisfactory version of a sports betting bill.

While the road to getting the bills into an acceptable state for all parties has been long, it’s been good to see several Georgia lawmakers working to move things along. A substantial proportion of Georgia’s population leans conservative and religious, and opposes gambling legalization, slowing progress.

Georgia is also a very restrictive state when it comes to other types of gambling. The state prohibits land-based casinos, poker, and horse and dog racing. The only legal forms of gambling (aside from sports betting in the future) are the Georgia lottery and various charitable gaming activities.

Georgia Betting Successes And Failures

Georgia Sports Betting Success

Georgia’s sports betting success record has so far been dismal because land-based and mobile sports betting have never been legal in any capacity. Even the Emerald Princess Casino, which is a cruise out of Brunswick and the only place for Georgia residents to enjoy traditional gambling activities, does not include sports betting.

However, thanks to a legal gray area, Georgia has allowed various daily fantasy sports operators to remain in the state. So it’s likely that sports betting will launch quickly and easily once a majority vote fully legalizes it.

Additionally, Georgia’s sports betting legalization effort has enjoyed the support of most major Georgian sports teams, such as the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks, and more.

Where Georgia Could Improve Online Gambling

Georgia could certainly improve its online gambling industry by not only legalizing sports betting but also legalizing other gambling activities, such as poker and casino games. Currently, only DFS sites, social casinos and poker sites are allowed, such as Global Poker and Chumba Casino, respectively. These allow players to participate in gaming activities through sweep coins that can be exchanged for cash prizes.

Georgia’s mobile sports betting legalization could be a pathway to greater public acceptance of future online gambling activities. That’s because the revenue it provides to the state government could show the viability of online gambling industries. Given enough momentum, the Georgia legislature may eventually allow online poker and casino games in addition to regular sports betting.

Sports Betting Legalization Efforts In Georgia

Georgia’s sports betting legalization effort has been long and featured multiple big developments. It took several years for suitable sports betting bills to reach the Georgia House and Senate, and even then, multiple versions were drafted over time.

For instance, the Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee first received a sports betting bill at the beginning of 2020. It was called SB 403. But that bill died quickly and did not gain much support.

Only recently did other bills, such as SB 142, HB 86, and HB 93, gain traction where earlier legislative attempts had failed. Sen. Burt Jones and other sports betting supporters had to push multiple times to get new versions of bills drafted.

HB 93 passed the House, while SB 142 passed the Senate. But neither bill passed before the end of the 2021 legislative session. The 2022 Georgia Legislature ended without passing any gambling bills. SR 135 was stripped and replaced, while SB 142 never reached the House floor.

Georgia Teams: Futures betting

Georgia has a very well-developed sports scene and multiple professional leagues with their own groups of fans. When sports betting comes to this state, players will be able to place wagers on their favorite teams and indulge in MLS odds, NFL odds, and MLB odds.

Georgia Men’s BasketballNCCA+30000

Any sportsbooks that arrive in Georgia will undoubtedly have plenty of excellent wagers for players to enjoy so they can support—or even bet against—their favorite teams. It’s no surprise that all of these teams support legal sports wagering, and future legislation may require sportsbooks to partner with one or more teams to receive a license.

Georgia College Sports Teams

In addition to plenty of professional sports teams, Georgia is home to several popular college football teams. The University of Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, and Georgia Tech all field strong football teams that compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The Georgia Bulldogs are of course the talk of the college football world still after winning the National Championship in the 2021-22 season. Head coach Kirby Smart led one of the best defenses of all time. Can they repeat this fall?

Indeed, collegiate football is a widely beloved recreational activity for many of the state’s residents. However, the House and Senate sports betting bills differ on how collegiate sports betting will be handled.

It’s not clear how the collegiate sports betting rules will be finalized. If a total ban is enacted, Georgian residents will not be able to place wagers on their favorite college sports teams at all.

Other Sports To Bet On In Georgia

In addition to football, basketball, baseball, and soccer, the people of Georgia love a variety of other sports, such as PGA golf, darts, cricket, and UFC fighting. Any major sportsbook that comes to this state will have plenty of betting markets for these activities and more, including more niche sports leagues like eSports if allowed by state law.

How To Bet in Georgia After Legalization

Again, because Georgia doesn’t have any retail casinos, it’s unlikely that the state will mandate in-person registration before you can place a wager using a future Georgia sportsbook. Instead, sports bettors can complete the registration process online and place a wager shortly after.

Let’s break down how to place a bet so you’re prepared when sports betting finally comes to Georgia.

Download The App

You’ll need to choose the perfect sportsbook app for your needs. Key factors include unique bonus offers, the ability to bet on your preferred sport and type of wager, and platform reliability.

Once you’ve identified the best app, you can download it directly from the App Store for iOS and the Google Play store for Android. However, Google Play started allowing betting apps as recently as March 2021, so some Android apps may need to be downloaded directly from the sportsbook website.

After downloading the app, users will also note that geolocation software will be installed on their devices. Georgia’s sports betting industry will require geolocation software to ensure you only place wagers within state borders.

Register

The registration process should be quick and straightforward. Players can provide key bits of personal information, like their physical address and date of birth, to verify their identities. The entire process should take only a few minutes because registration will likely be online.

Fund The Account

Your sports betting account will need to be funded through various deposit methods. Different deposit methods are available for different sportsbooks, but most allow you to fund your account with credit or debit card transfers, bank transfers, and electronic wallet transfers.

Players will also be wise to take advantage of any opening bonuses that may apply to their accounts. For example, BetRivers provides a deposit-match bonus that doubles your first deposit up to $250. Read about our best betting promotions here!

Place A Wager

Once your account is fully registered and funded, you can place a wager immediately on any available betting markets or lines. Depending on when you download the sportsbook, special game day bonuses might be promotional opportunities to take advantage of.
